It was in Hong Kong in 1953 at the age of 13, Master Derek Fung was introduced to Grandmaster Ip Man (Yip Man) by the Grandmaster's close friend and student Mr Chan (nicknamed A.B.C), and he has been practicing Wing Chun ever since. After just six months of training Sifu Derek Fung was ready to challenge martial artists from other disciplines ( this was common practice at the time ). He fought against opponents twice his senior and has never lost a fight. There were no rules, no protective gear, no weight or age divisions, and it was full contact combat. Sifu Derek Fung dedicated himself to studying Wing Chun and would train every day with Grandmaster Yip Man. Sifu Derek Fung trained with fellow students including Wong Shun Leung who came to refer to him as "Lightning Hands" for his phenominal speed and ability to use various Wing Chun techniques to overpower his opponents, and was the famed Bruce Lee's senior brother under Yip Man's guidence.
Sifu Derek Fung learned Wing Chun in the 1950's directly from Grandmaster Yip Man, during the peak of Yip Man's Wing Chun career. Not only was Yip Man at his peak in the 1950's but thanks to his uncompromising effort, skills and ability, his reputation as a formidable Martial Artist and the reputation of Wing Chun started to spread. It was also a time where contrary to tradition and his Master's wishes Grandmaster Yip Man opened his doors to larger numbers of students than was customary. Masters were only allowed to teach on their master's approval, and a master taught only 10 to 15 students in there lifetime, keeping the traditions of Kung Fu to a small but privileged few. It was also prohibitively expensive and only the wealthy could afford to learn Wing Chun. Fortunately for us Grandmaster Yip Man broke this mould enabling his dedicated disciples, such as Master Derek Fung Ping Bor to learn the Grandmaster's skills and knowledge at a time where he was at his best. His commitment and dedication has enabled Genuine Wing Chun to be passed down through the generations in its purest, un-watered down form through the teaching of Master Derek Fung Ping Bor.

Sifu Derek Fung is dedicated to teaching the Wing Chun system as it was taught to him by Grandmaster Yip Man, and in the tradition of Grandmaster Yip Man, Master Derek Fung welcomes those who wish to learn Wing Chun to join him at Fung Ping Bor Wing Chun.
